DUT’s Confucius Institute Participating SAPS Berea Crime Awareness Day 2015

Together with the Corporate Affairs Office and Video Department at DUT, the Confucius Institute was invited by SAPS Berea station to be a part of The Crime Awareness Day on March 28 to showcase DUT and Chinese culture to Durban communities. Confucius Institute at DUT contributed by attracting the audience to various programmes like Chinese Language and Culture Resource Exhibition, Chinese costumes, Chinese folk dance, Chinese traditional instrument playing and Chinese Martial Art serial performance, helping Durban communities experience the authentic Chinese culture and her long-standing history in South Africa.

In the display of Confucius Institute at DUT, Chinese lanterns, Chinese Peking Opera facial masks, Chinese traditional fans and other Chinese traditional ornaments are beautifully placed. Various books about Chinese cuisine, Chinese tale stories, Chinese traditional costumes and paintings etc. are displayed as an access for Durban communities to know more about China. Since the year of 2015 is The Year of China in South Africa, CI at DUT also introduced the significance of the year and partnership between China and South Africa from the aspect of culture exchanging and welcomed Durban communities to get involved in different CI programmes.

Besides, the CI at DUT had invited DUT Kongfu Team led by Mr Musa Mahlaba, the staff at DUT, to perform Chinese Martial Art, including Shaolin Cudgel, Shaolin Boxing, Shaolin Grabbing and Tai chi, which won the applause from all audience and aroused their interests in Chinese culture.

The CAD usually held between March and April is to bridge the gap between the police of SAPS Berea and the community it serves. An event of this calibre highlights the role of government and policing units play within the community, which serves the community to be aware of the role they play in assisting the police with policing in the Berea area and creating community partnerships.

Confucius Institute at DUT aims at providing the Mandarin Courses for DUT students and staffs, Durban communities and promoting the cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and South Africa. Until now, CI at DUT has cooperated with the Ethekwini Municipality, Municipal Department of Arts and Living Culture, Durban Central Library etc. to be engaged in Durban’s multicultural environment. Involving in Crime Awareness Day offers another chance for Durban communities to experience the diverse cultures of the city.
