The Rainbow Bridge to the East
“Experiencing China” Presentations co-hosted by Durban University of Technology and its Confucius Institute
On 24th, August 2016, The “Rainbow Bridge to the East – Experiencing China” presentations was successfully held at Cecil Renaud Theatre, Durban, co-hosted by Confucius Institute Headquarters/HanBan, Durban University of Technology and Confucius Institute at Durban University of Technology. The guest speakers of this brilliant presentation were all Mandarin learners from Confucius Institute at DUT: Dr Junaid Shaik & Dr Shakira Shaik, the senior researchers and academic experts from Durban University of Technology and University of KwaZulu-Natal, Nokuthula Chistobel Hadebe and Ntokozo Kalako, Mandarin students from CI at DUT. More than 300 guests, including DUT school leaders and lecturers gathered around to experience the fantastic presentation and witnessed how the Confucius Institute acts as a rainbow bridge in linking the peoples from both China and South Africa closely.
The presentation started with short advertising trailers of the Confucius Institute and one named as “Beautiful China”, showcasing the beautiful scenery and the unique, various and historical cultural heritages of China. The co-dean of the CI at DUT, Dr Chaobo Fu, who hosted this presentation, made the opening speech together with Dr Martin Mandew, senior executive in charge of DUT Midland campuses. They specified that as China-South Africa strategic-partnership keeps on growing more deeply and more quickly, the Confucius Institute as the friendship bridge between the two countries and also as the window of showcasing Chinese language and cultures, is playing a more and more significantly positive role in improving the cooperation between China and South Africa in the fields of culture, academic, education and resource-sharing.
Dr Shaik gave a fabulous speech with regard to a topic of “Is there any possibility----going to China for an academic visit?” With more than ten times of “Perfect” he described his astounding feeling and unforgettable experience in his last visit with his wife to Fujian province. Dr Shaik has successfully completed his Mandarin Level 1 course, and under his influence, his wife and his two sons also registered at CI DUT to study Mandarin. He stated that with the strong-growing of Chinese Fever around the whole globe, his whole family will not lag behind this trend; the Mandarin study becomes their important subject.
Nokuthula Chistobel Hadebe as the student of CI at DUT, who already went to visit China twice previously, provided a speech “My visit to China—once just a dream”, which detailed her visit to the major cities like BeiJing, TianJin, JiNan, ChangSha, and FuZhou. Her speech showed to all the audiences a breathtaking China as a vigorous and vibrant modern country. She added that, through the two-year study at DUT CI, she gradually realised the importance of master Mandarin, and she was also awarded with several prizes through a list of Mandarin language competitions. Another student of CI DUT, Ntokozo Kalako, presented a speech with regard to her recent visit to Shanghai sharing her experience and knowledge when she spent a short-term study period of time in this modern city.
Dean of the DUT CI, Prof Graham Stewart, gave a high praise of this presentation and also to Confucius Institute, saying that the Confucius Institute now is actually the ambassador between Chinese people and South African people and improves the relationships and friendship between these two nations.
Although the whole presentation was only about one afternoon, the enthusiastic responses from all the audience fully revealed their understanding towards the Chinese culture and good relationship between China and South Africa. The Confucius Institute at DUT will endeavour to make more efforts in improving the culture exchanges and carry out more activities in order to map a brighter future for both China and South Africa.
